FAQ

What's included with a star-ceiling system?

Our complete systems include every component you need for your personal star ceiling: high-quality fiber-optic bundles in various diameters for realistic star effects, a powerful light projector with state-of-the-art technology, a suitable power supply or direct connection, and a control unit with a range of lighting programs. At FOS Inon, we handle the entire professional installation for you.

How many light points do I need for my room?

For an optimal result, we recommend at least 100 to 150 stars per square meter. For a 20-square-meter bedroom, that would be roughly 2,000 to 3,000 light points. The exact number depends on your personal preferences and the effect you're after. Our experts are happy to advise you individually and create a bespoke concept for your space.

Can a star ceiling also be installed in a bathroom or sauna?

Yes, our fiber-optic systems are perfectly suited to wet rooms. Because the light points themselves carry no electricity and generate no heat, they are completely safe for bathrooms, showers, and even saunas. For sauna areas, we use special heat-resistant fibers with a polyimide coating that withstand temperatures up to 390 °C. The light projector is installed outside the wet room.

Which light colors and effects are possible?

Our systems offer a wide range of options: warm white light for a cozy atmosphere, cool white light for brilliant star effects, or RGB color changes for individual moods. In addition, various lighting programs can be set, such as gentle twinkling, realistic star shimmer, slow pulsing, or a static continuous glow. Brightness is continuously dimmable, and all settings are saved.

How long does a fiber-optic star ceiling last?

Our high-quality fiber-optic systems are extremely durable. The optical fibers themselves are virtually indestructible and retain their optical properties permanently. The light source is based on state-of-the-art technology with a service life of over 50,000 operating hours. Under average use, that corresponds to roughly 20 to 25 years. The system is maintenance-free, and individual light points never need to be replaced.

Why Choose Light Guides from FOS Inon Fiber Optics?

Quality “Made in Germany” pays off. Thanks to our proprietary manufacturing and testing processes, we offer custom solutions for numerous applications, from laboratories to aerospace.

Excellent Performance

Optimal performance across various spectral ranges (white light, UV, NIR), achieved through state-of-the-art manufacturing processes and custom concepts tailored specifically for your application area.

Temperature-Resistant

Whether for cold or warm application environments, thanks to special jacketing, our glass fibers remain stable at temperatures ranging from -190°C to 390°C.

Acid-Resistant

Our light guides withstand adverse conditions thanks to their high chemical resistance.

Stable & flexible

Thanks to the flexibility of the fiber optic cables, pressure is not a problem. Their bending strength is enormous, and very small bending radii are possible, ensuring the fiber optic cables remain reliably in use for a long time.

Sustainable

FOS INON Optics is committed to using the most environmentally friendly manufacturing, logistics, and communication processes possible. Think green!

Support and Experience

You are not just buying a product; you are benefiting from our expertise and extensive experience in the fiber optics industry. Our team of experts is happy to advise you and will support you in the planning and implementation of your projects.

Manufacturing Process

To ensure our light guides and fiber optic products meet the highest standards, we rely on a specialized manufacturing process. This allows us to guarantee exceptional chemical and tactile robustness so they can perform optimally in their respective environments. Precision is a critical factor in this, true to our motto: “Making the impossible happen.”

Materials Used

  • Borosilicate: Glass with high temperature resistance and chemical resilience.
  • PMMA (Polymethylmethacrylate): A thermoplastic, lightweight plastic with high light transmittance.
  • Silica-Hard Clad: A robust plastic coating for improved strength and durability.
  • Silica-Silica for UV and NIR Wavelengths: Our specialized glass fibers, optimized for the transmission of light in the ultraviolet (UV) and near-infrared (NIR) ranges.

PMMA is a thermoplastic material, known under brand names such as Plexiglas or acrylic glass. In fiber optics, PMMA is used for:

  • Flexible, cost-effective fiber optic cables are used
  • Large core diameters (up to several millimeters)
  • Applications using visible light

PMMA fibers are less temperature-resistant than glass fibers (max. 70-100°C), but significantly more flexible and less expensive. This makes them a particularly good choice for lighting or sensors where extreme temperatures are not present.

What is PMMA?

Borosilicate (also called “boron glass”) is a special type of glass with a high boron oxide content. It is the same material used to make heat-resistant laboratory glassware and baking molds. In fiber optics, it offers:

  • Excellent chemical resistance to acids and alkalis
  • Good temperature resistance up to approximately 400-500°C
  • Low thermal expansion (less stress during temperature changes)

Ideal for standard industrial applications and lighting.

What is borosilicate?

Optional Specifications:

  • Various apertures available
  • Polarization can be maintained
  • Anti-reflection coating possible
  • Various lengths, diameters, bending radii, converters, and vacuum feedthroughs optional
  • Various connectors and ferrules suitable for industry and medicine

SMA (Sub-Miniature A) is a standard screw-type connector for fiber optic cables, designed for laboratory equipment and spectrometers. The connector has a 1/4″-36 thread. FSMA is the fiber optic version with a specially protected ferrule for the sensitive fiber end face. Standardized connectors allow you to connect our cables directly to your equipment, or we can manufacture custom connectors for your specific application.

What are SMA and FSMA connectors?

Silica-silica fibers consist entirely of high-purity quartz glass (silicon dioxide), both the core and the cladding. This construction offers:

  • Extremely high temperature resistance up to 1000°C
  • Optimal transmission in the UV range (below 300 nm)
  • Excellent transmission in the NIR range (1000-2500 nm)
  • Minimal absorption losses

Therefore, these fibers are primarily used in high-performance lasers, UV curing, and spectroscopy.
